I’m Melanie Seasons, but since I’ve moved to London most people call me Mel (probably due to what seems to be some sort of English obsession with nicknames. Fact.).

I started this blog to write a little bit about social media and a lot about my experience living as an American ex-pat in this fabulous black booger-inducing city.

Before moving to London I spent 7 wonderful years in and around Ann Arbor going to Eastern Michigan University for PR and communication theory.  After graduating and doing the travel thing for a while, I landed my first digital PR job here.

A couple years ago I decided that it would be pretty sweet if I could move to London.  After a very prolonged process my dream came true when I landed on this fair land, my onlinefire work permit in-hand, on 22 August, 2008.

A couple other fun facts to put in your pipe:

  • The clothes in my closet are organised into Roy G. Biv
  • I have an acute case of Podophobia
  • I enjoy making lists
  • I’ve been known to spend an entire day retagging mp3s so that all the cases match
  • I am not a morning person. Generally the rule is you’re not allowed to talk to me until I talk to you. This very rarely happens before 9:15 on a weekday, 11:00 on a weekend.
  • My feet and hands are always cold
  • I think skinny jeans are ugly (unless you’re a stick) and will give up on fashion all together if stirrup pants really do come back in style
  • If I’m within three feet of a sliced cucumber, I dry heave.
  • I don’t actually have a Fingerstache, I’m just clever with Photoshop

I’m happy to get all sorts of e-mail as long as it’s relevant and not spammy, so feel free to write me at Melanie AT FakePlasticNoodles.com.

I love this “about.” I have never heard the term “perso-professional,” but I’m liking it. Now, for your list – I love Roy G. Biv clothing organizing. What member of Roy G. BIv do you have the most of in your closet? Finally, does your podophobia mean you’re afraid of the iPod or that you’re actually afraid of pods like those ones that were in the movie Coccoon?

  2. The only thing I wear are skinny jeans. :( But I will never wear stirrup pants.

Plus I love your Last.fm profile. The Dresden Dolls, Nine Inch Nails, The Velvet Underground, Tegan and Sara, Architecture in Helsinki. Eep orgasm! (Plus I like the other stuff you have on there too.)

  3. Wendy,

I never thought my fashion comment would produce such hostility! ;-) I have those “About Me’s” listed on my profile at an indie crafting site and a girl told me she had stirrup pants in nine colours.

So, I need to clarify: I like straight leg jeans (I am wearing a pair right now), but not skinny tapered jeans. I think that they just aren’t flattering on a lot of people – including me. I still hate and will always stirrup pants. They remind me too much of being 12. If they come back into style, what’s next? The matching scrunchy? Perish the thought.

Oh, and thanks for the music compliment. It’s what keeps me sane at the office :-)

  4. Aberclay,

Your About Me is much, much better than mine. Does not compare in the least.

My Roy G. Biv is a little more than an addiction. I actually try not to have too much of one colour in there so as not to disrupt the aesthetic qualities of the closet. What’s even worse is that after they are classified into colours, they are classified by collar and sleeve style.

Dear lord, I’ve said too much.

Podophobia is a fear of feet. I *really* don’t like having my feet touched and I absolutely positively won’t touch anyone else’s.

And now comes the part where everyone backs away from me slowly.

  5. [...] This is genius. Hey, we’re big fans of new media, but we’re applying it to a legacy business in order to enhance that business. With that disclaimer, I’ll point you to a brilliant video we caught on Fake Plastic Noodles, a PR blog out of the U.K. – Thanks Melanie! [...]

Nice. You are being added to my Blogroll. And the fact that abarclay12 likes you helps quite a bit. My closet would be organized according to ROYGBIV if I had clothes in colors other than grey, brown, navy, and black…So I suppose my color scheme acronym would require using at least the 2 first letters and be something like “Nabl Grbk”.

  7. dragonize Says:

    errr….”Nabla Grebro” rather.

I am a skinny girl who loves skinny jeans, but I must admit stirrups are disgusting! I had to comment on this blog because my hands and feet are always cold (I’ve often wondered what causes that) and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE making list as well. It’s something about the sense of accomplishment I feel after everything is crossed off…

    What’s wrong with cucumber?
(apart from the fact that it’s exceedingly mediocre, and 90% water?)

I love your about me! So catchy and fun… I feel as if I really know you. It’s nice to hear about Americans in pr living in the UK. I am still a student at the University of Alabama, but I will be in London for 7 weeks this summer for an internship. It’s unknown where I will be placed, but I am definitely going to rely on your blog to get me ahead of my other American cohorts!

Hi,first of all, have to say that i really love ur blog layout and this “about” section.
Btw, I am a student who is doing Public relations master degree in the University of Newcastle. I’m currently preparing for my dissertation on the topic of blogger relations in PR, more specifically, focus on the use of blog in PR and the relationships between practitioners and bloggers. I’m aware that you specialize in online PR and have wide range of experience in working with bloggers. I’d like to ask for your help, taking part in an interview which surely can bring invaluable insight and knowledge into my project.
I’d like to discuss things in further detail and look forward to your response.
